Households: your whole financial picture in one place

Updated

Summary

See everything your household owns, owes, spends, and saves — investments, external accounts, and net worth — all in one view with Wealthsimple.

There's a decent chance your money lives in more places than you'd like to admit. A chequing account over here, an investment account over there, a mortgage somewhere else. Your household's accounts, wherever those are. Each one makes sense on its own, but it can be tricky to see how they all add up — to know exactly where your household stands.

So we built households — a way to bring your household's entire financial life into a single view. Not just the Wealthsimple parts. All of it.

Households lets you connect your Wealthsimple accounts, link external accounts and assets, and see your combined net worth, holdings, and spending in one place. Share what's relevant, keep everything else private — households aren't all or nothing. You choose what each other sees, and you can switch between a household view and your personal view anytime. It's already live in the app, and any two Wealthsimple customers who live together can create a household, no strings attached.

What is a household at Wealthsimple?

A household is a shared financial view you create with another member of your household. Once you invite them and they accept, you can both see your combined picture: what you own, what you owe, how your investments are performing, and where your money is going each month. Either of you can toggle back to a personal view whenever you want — nothing forces the two of you into one screen permanently.

It's built for the reality that when you live with someone, most financial decisions aren't made in a silo — from the big calls to the everyday ones.

What this means for you

Here's what it actually changes day to day.

  • A financial home for your household, finally. One place to see where your household stands — no more juggling apps, logins, and a spreadsheet to add it all up. Buying a home, planning a year off, figuring out if you're on track: it's all in one view.

  • Money talks get a shared starting point. No more "wait, how much is in that account?" You're working from the same information, so the conversation can skip past logistics and get to the actual decision.

  • You decide what's shared and what stays yours. Partnership isn't all or nothing, and neither are households. You choose what your household member sees and what stays private, so you get the full picture on your terms.

How net worth works

Net worth on Wealthsimple shows everything you own and owe — not just the Wealthsimple parts. You can link external accounts like a mortgage or an investment account at another institution, and manually add cash, assets, and debts like a home, a car, or a credit card balance. The result is a real number instead of an estimate.

Net worth is available whether or not you set up a household — individuals get the full picture too.

How spend insights works

Spend insights tracks where your household's money is going — by category and over time — without a spreadsheet or a separate budgeting app. The point isn't to police every coffee. It's to answer a simple question: are we spending in line with our goals?

Like net worth, spend insights works for individuals too.

How Household holdings and performance insights work

Household holdings and performance insights put your household's investments in a single view, so you can see your combined portfolios and how they’re performing over time. If you've each been tracking your own accounts separately, this may be the first time you'll see them add up as one.

Already building together? Joint accounts fit right in

If you want to go further than a shared view, you can open a joint chequing account and start building toward shared goals with money that's genuinely pooled. Households makes the picture visible; joint accounts let you act on it together.

A note on the numbers

The figures you see — net worth, performance, spending trends — are only as accurate as the accounts you connect and the assets you add. Investment values move with the market, so your net worth will too. Linked external balances update on their provider's schedule, so there can be a lag. And investing always involves risk, including the risk of loss. Households are a clearer way to see your money, not a promise about where it's headed.

Create your household

Setting it up takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Open the Wealthsimple app on your phone or computer.

  2. Go to your profile and select Household.

  3. Invite your household member by email and make sure they set up an account. Once they accept, your combined view turns on.

  4. Customize your household and choose which accounts you'd like to share — keep the rest private.

  5. Link a new account or add external assets and debts to complete the picture.
