FAQs

Can I create a household with a significant other? A roommate? My pet goldfish?

The answer is yes, yes, and no (unless your goldfish somehow has a Wealthsimple account). You can start a household with anyone, so long as you’re both Wealthsimple clients and share a residential address. If you haven’t both signed up, start there. Then you’re ready to connect your household.

So a household’s a shared view of our finances. Does that mean my partner sees... everything?

Not quite. You can add any Wealthsimple accounts to your household, but each person controls what they share. Some choose to keep parts private. (Because that Funko Pop habit is strictly your business.) The other household member can see balances on accounts you’ve chosen to share, but can’t move your money or view your transaction history. You can share or unshare accounts whenever you like. It’s your call.

Does combining our assets into a household affect our client status?

Yes. And that’s a good thing. When you join a household, your combined assets count towards a client plan, making it easier to reach Premium or Generation status sooner.

Can we use households to track our spending, even if we have separate accounts?

Yep. It’s one of the great things about households — spend tracking pulls together transactions from your accounts into a shared view, so you can see where your money is going as a team, not solo. Your days of logging the cost of takeout in a spreadsheet are over.

Is my financial information safe to share through a household?

Absolutely. Every account linked to your household has the same protections as your individual account. In terms data shared, you’re alway in control of what you show members of your household — and others can’t move your money or view your detailed account activity.

So how is this different from a joint account?

Great question. A joint account is one account, owned by multiple people. You can both make transactions in a joint account, and it’s ideal for shared spending or saving goals. A household’s a shared view: It’s your individual and joint accounts side by side, giving you a full picture of your finances. You can have both, and honestly, most households will want to.

Let’s talk net worth. Can I link accounts from other financial institutions?

You bet. You can link external accounts, add assets like real estate or a car, and include debts like your mortgage or student loans. Our goal is to give you a complete view of your net worth — not just the stuff at Wealthsimple.

What happens to our household if we change addresses?

Since members of a household need to share a residential address, you’ll each need to make sure your address is up to date in the app.
